I loved this book, The Through by A. Rafael Johnson. It's magical realism reminded me a great deal of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I loved the way it pulled together the black experience and the history of slavery with the current day troubles of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Tuscaloosa, Alabama after its infamous tornado, and blended all that with the lives of characters who were so vivid and real. It even pulled in the fight against apartheid investment on the University of Texas campus in the 1980s. I also felt the presence of Toni Morrison and Beloved along with other novels of hers. The prose was very lyrical. The metaphor of the slave ship being carried by the characters on top of their heads speaks volumes. It will take a lot of pondering on my part to fully appreciate the depth of this book, but it will stick with me, of that I am sure. A great debut novel. Can't wait to read more from Mr. Johnson.

The Through edition by A Rafael Johnson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book was incredible. The story weaves between the literal and the magical in such a beautiful way, and many times I didn't know which realm I was in--but as the character Cut Mary emphasizes, whether something is true is more important than whether it's a fact. I decided to just let the story wash over me, rather than trying to make sure I understood exactly what was happening. I want to read it again to discover all the layers of meaning.

I was struck by the author's treatment of trauma--racism, sexual assault, Hurricane Katrina, slavery. These subjects were handled with incredible sensitivity and power, but somehow without heaviness. I recommend reading it with a friend or a book club--you'll want someone to discuss it with.
What a wonderful book! I am looking forward for the next novel by this author
This book reads like a poem. It is very beautiful with interesting characters. I am sure that I will read it a second time.
An unusual story full of magic and folk tales. Not like the books I usually read but I'm glad I gave it a chance, I really enjoyed it!
Wow! This was really a lot above this retired middle school english teachers head but kept me thinking on every page. Amazing characterization and verbal pictures. Thank you Andy for helping me see into my brain as we traveled through theirs. Loved it!!
A. Raphael Johnson's writing is lyrical. It was so easy to get so carried away with the beautiful sound and craftsmanship of a paragraph that I would sometimes miss the layers of meaning -- the characters' inner lives, historical references, political commentary, and more. The Through is a book you'll want to read more than once, and you'll find something different in it each time. A mesmerizing book by a debut author who surely has a fantastic career ahead of him.
I loved this powerful, meaningful story of the so very many ways we humans experience and process loss, abuse, our collective trauma after disaster, and the slow, painful, generational recovery from man's cruelty to man. It is luxurious, with rich, delicious language and nuance that I wanted to re-read as I read every page, to re-taste the sweet, sharp, spicy goodness and keep it on my palate. This novel will be a classic and should be taught to students around the world, to foster understanding of African-American experiences and of the lasting, hidden wounds from disasters, personal and collective. Please read this book, and give it to a teacher, a book club, a healer, a leader.
