Defiant Heart Westward Hearts Series #1 Tracey Bateman 9780061246333 Books
I like to read stories about folks on a wagon train where more often than not the trail master is the lead male character and the lead female is one of the single travelers. This was the case.Blake has a rule.. 'no single women allowed' but Fannie has her own rule, 'I will follow along anyway'. Fannie's choices were limited, she and her two younger twin siblings were staying with a cruel and obnoxious man who many times hit Fannie for whatever reason, especially when he had been drinking. Blake meets Fannie when his wagon train stops in her town to get supplies.
Fannie ends up joining up with the wagon train with the twins and an aquaintance who is also desperate to get from under her 'protector' (and I use that word sarcastically). BTW, I'm not giving too much information away here as this happens early on and you can read some of it on the back of the book. Troubles occur throughout the journey and Blake protects Fannie and family throughout.
Although at times they were both very stubborn and were caustic to each other, it wasn't so much that it made me grind my teeth which usually happens with other books. :)
I loved it and look forward to reading book two of this series, which I believe is Toni and Sam's story.

Defiant Heart Westward Hearts Series #1 Tracey Bateman 9780061246333 Books Reviews
In 1847 their stepfather sold Fannie Caldwell and her preadolescent siblings Katie and Kip to Tom as indentured servants. Over the next three years raging drunken Tom treats them horribly, abusing them although Fannie as a lioness protecting her cubs absorbs most of his wrath. However, she is concerned by the way Tom stares and leers at twelve years old Katie; she vows they will escape before he assaults her younger sister.
Fannie befriends Toni the town's fallen woman. They agree to flee together with the former's siblings at the first opportunity. When wagon master Blake Tanner arrives in town, the two females book passage on his trip west although he objects to single women with no man to protect them. As Fannie and Blake, and Toni with the wagon master's best friend Two Feathers fall in love, danger seems everywhere besides the normal perilous journey as someone wants either one or both women dead although no reason seems apparent except perhaps Tom seeking revenge for the Caldwells running away.
The first Westward Hearts tale is a wonderful western romance starring fully developed characters bringing to life the decade before the Civil War on the Great Plains. The story line is driven by the cast who face all sorts of peril as they seek a new hopefully better life. Readers will admire the intrepid Fannie who is fierce when it comes to keeping Katie and Kip safe, but also loving and vulnerable. Toni will receive much empathy from the audience for her trials and tribulations. Tracy Bateman shows why she is an award winning author with this suburb Americana romance.

You will fall in love with the characters!!! I was sad to finish the series!
Did not know this was a series. Bought first book, then realized it was a series. Bought all books in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed these books. Good reading interspered with tension, love, friendship.
Book was in excellent shape, unfortunately I read the series backwards as I read book three and then bought this one because our local library didn't carry. If you haven't read Tracey Bateman, you should at least give her a try. This is Christian Fiction, good story , clean story.
This is just one of those books that you pick up and start reading and the next thing you know is that it's the end of the book! Loved this storyline, finished in a couple of hours and I have started on the second book in this series, like this author's books.
I enjoyed this book., even tho I knew how it would probably end. The sexual content was just suggestive in that you knew that one of the women had been forced into prostitution and the other young woman had been used that way by her stepfather. Nothing was WRITTEN...you just knew it. The violence was a little more out there....an evil man beating a young woman, and kidnapping...however, alls well that ends well so they say.
Really enjoyed this book. It had a great story line and it wasn't one of those books that makes you so nervous you want to chew your nails before its finished. For me, I'm glad to be reading the book / series years after it was released; otherwise, I might have been slightly upset with the ending. Not because it wasn't a happy ending. It was for Blake and Fannie - happy, but not complete / finished - but left us wondering about Toni and some of the others. Lucky for me I also have the remaining two books in the series. Looking forward to seeing how energy thing turns out.
